About Truth to Power Northwest
Truth to Power Northwest is a digital civil rights magazine devoted to amplifying voices that most institutions ignore—people who are poor, incarcerated, unhoused or otherwise marginalized. It was founded in 2024 by me, investigative journalist Jared Brown, after my public radio station cut funding for my job while I was continuing to report on the 2020 Tacoma police killing of Manny Ellis and other deaths at the hands of Washington law enforcement.
Covering crime and police accountability since 2019, I’ve lived the burnout, the disillusionment, and the moral injury of bearing witness to systemic injustice as a cog in an industry that profits off trauma. I know what it’s like to fight for truth while the news cycle chews up stories and spits them out, moving on before the real work even begins. That’s not how I do journalism.
T2PNW is for people who care about justice but are skeptical that legacy media are telling the whole story. We challenge power, build community, and tell the stories that matter without losing ourselves in the process.
This is journalism on the people's terms.
